NAUGATUCK — Police have identified Raymond Schultz as the man killed by a falling tree in town during the height of the storm Tuesday afternoon.

“The Naugatuck Police Department mourns the loss of Schultz with the community and extends our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” police said.

The 66-year-old was in the area of Andrew Mountain Road and Red Maple Court at 3:30 p.m. when he got out of his car to move branches from the road, according to police. While Schultz was moving the branches, police said, a tree fell and hit him.

First responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

The storm hit the state around mid-afternoon Tuesday, ripping down trees and wires and knocking out power to more than 700,000 utility customers across the state.

In New Haven, a falling tree also hit a man walking outside the Newhalls Package Store, breaking one of the man’s legs and cutting up the other, according to officials.
