PeeWee power: Darien Youth Hockey team captures state crown
The DYHA PeeWee B team put an exclamation mark on its season with a 5-3 win over the Northwestern Icehawks to claim the Adams Division Tier 4 state championship at Stamford Twin Rinks on Sunday, March 11.
Coach Bob Mazzone’s team’s strong showing throughout the tournament from both offense and defense allowed the boys to finish on a hot steak, going 4-0-1 over the weekend. Gavin Garrison stepping up with hard work both in the crease and skating, as well as a contribution from Petros Dulos in goal and through the season, made for the championship finish.
Northwestern scored quickly to open the game, but goals from centers Max Smith (1 goal, 2 assists) and Holden Caney (1 goal, 1 assist) had PWB up 2-1 halfway through the first. A back-and-forth battle ensued during the second period. Solid play from Keith Davey and Matty Katzman helped control the puck until winger Quinn Kilroy netted his first of the game and put Darien up 3-2 with 4:29 left in the second period.
The third frame started off strong for Darien as winger Will Glassmeyer scored, assisted by the hard work of Riley Davidson, for a 4-2 lead less than a minute into the period. The extra breathing room was temporary, as the Icehawks scored on a power play to make it a 4-3 game with 11 minutes to go. Kilroy continued to battle in the period, scoring his second goal of the game to put the “boys in blue” up 5-2 with seven minutes remaining.
The defense played strong all weekend thanks to coach Ben Potash, but no more so than during the closing minutes of the game, as Russell Tarrant, Ted Williams, Truman Wiate, Rowan Fahy, and Jack Maher, as well as Ryan Costikyan, killed off a series of penalties.
With three minutes left, the stellar play of the defense, including goalie Garrison, Max Smith, Holden Caney, and Andrew Ferguson, helped hold off a 6-on-3 power play as the Icehawks pulled their goalie during a final push.
