History in the rink: Ice Cats 12U A win Tier 1
The CT Ice Cats 12U A team won the 2016-17 New England District Tier I Regional hockey championship in Exeter, New Hampshire on March 19.
The CT Ice Cats is a local sports organization comprised of female hockey players from the New Canaan Winter Club and the Darien Youth Hockey Association.
There are now 170 girls, who participate on 11 travel hockey teams each season.
The 12U A girls started the weekend off well with the initial game Friday night against the Seacoast Spartans from New Hampshire, winning 7-1.
Saturday morning proved to be a tougher match up against the Rhode Island Sting.
The girls won 2-0.
And the day ended with a challenging game against the Hartford Jr Wolfpack, the Ice Cats losing 3-2.
Payback was sweet though on Sunday morning, as both the Ice Cats and Hartford Jr Wolfpack met again in the championship game.
The Ice Cats came out of the box ready for battle and launched waves of fore-checkers that caused endless turnovers.
The Ice Cats displayed some of its best skating and hockey in the 52nd game of the season, winning 4-0.
No hockey team from either Darien or New Canaan has ever won a girl’s or boy’s Tier 1 championship, according to the Ice Cats.
