Wave spikes states paced by Hergets and Preston
Darien wouldn’t settle for second best.
Disappointed after beating Ridgefield for the county trophy, but falling to the Tigers short of twin titles in the state final in 2016, now the Wave has done it all, beating East Hartford in a sweep for the Class L crown.
We are all sad it has come to an end, but are all so happy that it happened.
— Tim Herget
The second seed Wave kept well ahead taking the games 25-14, 25-19, 25-16 at East Haven on Thursday.
"It is such a great feeling to finish out the season like this," said Darien's Tim Herget. "An FCIAC and a state championship together are very special."
Tyler Herget was credited with the usual slew of assists, having 35 helpers.
Bashing down the setups, senior captains, hitters Tim Herget and Alex Preston leading the show. The former whacked 15 kills and the latter 20.
Tim Herget scored 15 service points.
"I have loved every minute of playing on the court with my teammates and coaches," Tim Herget said. "It has been an incredible four years. We are all sad it has come to an end, but are all so happy that it happened."
The Wave ends its twin titles season at 25-1, the Hornets at 21-2.
"We will cherish our times together and we are very excited that we were able to bring back Darien High School's first Class L state championship," Herget added.
