Wave crashes over Warde in swimming and diving
Nine first-place finishes propelled Darien High’s swim and dive team to a dominating end to its regular season.
The Wave defeated Fairfield Warde 105-73 on Thursday, yet the score was not even that close as Darien built a 105-35 advantage with three races remaining, so coach Marj Trifone’s squad did not even record a score in those races, all but one it would have won anyway.
Junior Lexi Punishill earned two first-place finishes (500 free at 5:39.33 and 200 free at 2:05.00), as did senior Cassie Maroney, who earned top finishes in the 50 free (27.12) and 100 free (1:02.09).
Freshman Maggie Sedlak placed first in the 200 IM (2:41.18); junior Halle Spataro was first in the 100 fly (1:15.36), edging out teammate freshman Kaitlyn Holmes, who finished second at 1:15.39. Emma Hunter captured the first spot in the diving competition.
The relay teams also earned first-place finishes. The 200 medley relay team of senior Lauren Picard, Holmes, sophomore Emily Fischer and sophomore Kendall Luecke was first at 2:11.68, followed by teammates sophomore Olivia Golden, senior Jen Chen, senior Kelsey Vrooman and sophomore Hope Murray, who placed second at 2:14.69.
The 200 free relay team of freshman Kelly Dolce, Vrooman, Maroney and Punishill placed first at 1:59.02, followed by teammates sophomore Kelsey Olvany, Fischer, junior Sloane Latimer and Murray at 2:03.26.
Other solid finishers were Luecke (2:45.21) and Picard (2:45.78), who placed second and third, respectively, in the 200 IM. Dolce placed second in the 50 free at 27.77, and Olvany and Vrooman each finished third in the 100 fly and 100 free, respectively.
