Wave by the Numbers: Title games, playoff wins, and Wickham warriors
The postseason is now in full swing, and this week’s Wave by the Numbers takes a look at some of the impressive stats for Darien’s fall sports teams.
The field hockey team, which will play for the FCIAC crown on Thursday, is batting leadoff, with the girls soccer and volleyball teams also in the midst of great seasons. We cap off the week with a look at the cross country teams and two runners who are racing into the State Open.
Score of the Darien Blue Wave’s victory over the Greenwich Cardinals in the FCIAC field hockey semifinals Monday at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk. The second-seeded Wave will face No. 1 Staples for the league championship at 7 p.m., Thursday, at BMHS.
Goals scored in the semifinal game by senior co-captain Shea van den Broek. All three came in the first half — in the 4th, 10th and 20th minutes — as Darien built a 3-0 lead and then held off a Greenwich comeback attempt in the second half.
FCIAC championships in program history for the Darien field hockey team. Seven of those titles have come during the past 10 years, including last season when the Blue Wave shut out Wilton 3-0 in the final. Darien will be making its 17th appearance in the league final since 1983.
Record of Darien’s field hockey team against the other seven FCIAC tournament qualifiers this year. The Wave lost to Staples 2-1 back on opening day, but has since won eight straight against the playoff teams by a combined score of 38-8.
Loss for the Staples Wreckers’ girls soccer team, as the FCIAC’s top seed was upset by the No. 8 Darien Blue Wave 2-0 in overtime in the FCIAC quarterfinals last Thursday. Staples is now 13-1-3, while Darien, which fell to New Canaan 5-0 in the semis, is 10-6-2.
Time in minutes for the Darien girls soccer team to eliminate No. 1 Staples. The two teams played 80 scoreless minutes in regulation before the Wave received goals from Eilanna Dolan and Nathalie Bravo during the first 90 seconds of overtime.
Score of the Darien volleyball team’s victory over the Greenwich Cardinals in the FCIAC quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Wave came from behind to win each set, beating the Cardinals 25-23, 25-17, 26-24. No. 5 Darien will face No. 1 Westhill in the semis at Fairfield-Ludlowe at 5 p.m., Thursday.
The last time the Darien Blue Wave reached the FCIAC semifinals in girls volleyball before this season. Darien has been knocked out by Greenwich in the quarterfinals the past two seasons, but gained a measure of revenge this year. The current senior co-captains — Cristina Escajadillo, Lindsay Bennett and Gabby Highton — were freshmen when they last played in the semis.
Time over 5,000 meters for Darien freshman Mairead Class, who finished fifth in the Class L girls cross country championship race last Friday in Wickham Park. Clas helped the Wave finish fifth as a team and she qualified to run in the State Open race on Thursday, again in Wickham Park.
