Wave by the Numbers: Perfection, semis sweet, and OK in OT
This week’s edition of Wave by the Numbers features plenty of Darien winning, as the football team remained perfect, the field hockey and volleyball teams advanced in the state playoffs, and the Wave girls soccer team knocked off a giant once again.

Darien will have a chance to avenge that loss when it plays New Canaan at 10:30 a.m., Thanksgiving Day, in Stamford’s Boyle Stadium.

Consecutive state championships won by Darien, which has also appeared in five straight state finals. Last season, the Blue Wave defeated Greenwich 31-22 in the Class LL final at a snow-covered Boyle Stadium.
Game unbeaten streak for the Darien field hockey team, which is now 18-2-1 after opening the season 2-2 through its first four contests. The Wave, which has beaten New Canaan 3-2, and Hall 4-0 in the first two rounds of the Class L playoffs, will face the Staples Wreckers in the semifinals at 6 p.m., Tuesday, at Brien McMahon High School.

Score by which the volleyball team trailed before rallying for a 29-27 win in the fourth set of its match at Newtown in the CIAC Class LL second round last Thursday. The Wave held off match point and tied the score at two sets apiece, before winning in the fifth 15-11.

Head coach Leigh Parsons’ Wave had a strong postseason, as they knocked off two undefeated teams, beating Staples 2-0 in overtime in the FCIAC quarterfinals and Suffield 1-0 in OT in the Class LL second round. Darien’s season ended with a 1-0 loss to Ridgefield in last Friday’s rain-soaked quarterfinals.
Mairead Clas’s time over 5,000 meters at the 84th Annual New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championships, held Saturday at Derryfield Park in Manchester, N.H. A Darien freshman, Clas finished in 35th place. She had the sixth-best time for runners from the FCIAC, which had 29 athletes qualify for the regional meet.
