Wave by the Numbers: Ostberg stars at Stanford; hockey, hoops halfway home

To start this week’s Wave by the Numbers, we head out west to Stanford to take a look at a former FCIAC champion who is now blazing a trail for the Cardinal cross country and track and field programs. Heading back home to Darien, the Wave girls ice hockey team hits the halfway point, and there are also a few stats from the basketball court, the track and the rink.

Alex Ostberg’s time in the 10K race at the NCAA cross country championships in November. A junior at Stanford University, Ostberg finished 16th and earned All-American honors. Stanford finished fourth in the team standings.

Ostberg’s personal best time in the 5,000-meter run as a member of the Stanford track and field program. The 2015 graduate of Darien High School posted the time during the outdoor season in 2017. The Cardinals kick off the 2018 season at the UW Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle this weekend.

Record of the Darien Blue Wave girls ice hockey team, which reached the midpoint of the season with a 5-1 win over Hall/Conard on Monday, Jan. 22. The Wave is 7-2 in the FCIAC and in second place by virtue of its head-to-head tiebreaker over Greenwich.

Three-pointers hit by the Stamford Black Knights during a 58-52 win over the Darien Blue Wave girls basketball team on Jan. 19. Those baskets overcame a strong performance by the Wave, which rallied from a 16-8 deficit after one quarter and had a 39-30 lead in the third quarter.

Points scored by Justin Jordan during last Darien's boys basketball game against the Stamford Black Knights on Jan. 19. Jordan hit a pair of 3-point baskets and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. The Wave rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to tie the game heading to the fourth quarter, but was edged out for the win, 49-45.

Record of the Darien Blue Wave boys ice hockey team after Saturday’s 1-1 tie with the Westhill/Stamford co-op.

Combined record of the boys ice hockey teams the Wave has lost to this season. Darien’s schedule has been daunting, with six of the first 11 games against teams that are ranked in the top six of the GameTimeCT state poll. That includes two against top-ranked and unbeaten Fairfield Prep.

Darien’s time in the distance medley relay at the 36th Yale Interscholastic Track and Field Classic on Saturday, Jan. 20, at Coxe Cage in New Haven. The team, which finished fourth, was composed entirely of seniors: Griffin Ott, Austin Hagander, Oliver Knight, and Alex Klarer.
