The Darien Blue Wave's state tournament rundown
Class L Girls Lacrosse, First Round
No. 15 Amity (10-7) at No. 2 Darien (17-2), 5 p.m., Tuesday
The Blue Wave won its eighth consecutive FCIAC championship last week and looks to keep the train rolling in the Class L playoffs, which get underway today. Amity opened the tournament with a 13-7 win over Southington in the qualifying round.
Next: If Darien wins, it would host either No. 7 Ludlowe (12-5) or No. 10 Conard (11-5) in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Class L Girls Tennis, Quarterfinals
No. 6 Wilton (18-3) at No. 3 Darien (17-2), 3 p.m., Wednesday
The FCIAC foes have split two matches this season, with Darien winning 4-3 during the regular season, and Wilton winning 5-2 in the conference semifinals. Darien easily won its first round match against No. 14 Simsbury 6-1, while Wilton had to fight off No. 11 Greenwich 4-3. Darien, Wilton and No. 1 Staples are the last three FCIAC teams remaining in the tournament.
Next: The winner will either play at No. 2 South Windsor (17-0) or host No. 7 Southington (16-3) in the semifinals.
Class LL Baseball, First Round
No. 19 Darien (13-9) at No. 14 Danbury (13-8), 3:30 p.m., Wednesday
Darien defeated Danbury in the FCIAC quarterfinals, but the Hatters have eliminated the Wave in the first round of the state tournament in each of the past two seasons. Danbury won the regular-season meeting between the two teams 16-2 in five innings.
Next: The winner will either play at No. 3 Southington (17-3) or host No. 30 New Britain (11-10) in the second round on Thursday.
Class L Boys Tennis, Quarterfinals
At Wesleyan University, Middletown, 3:30 p.m., Wednesday
The Darien Blue Wave and New Canaan Rams are tied for the lead with 21 points apiece heading into the quarterfinal round, followed by Daniel Hand in third with 18 points, and Wilton in fourth with 15 points. The Rams and Wave appear to be ready to battle down to the wire, as each has two singles players and three doubles teams in the quarterfinals. That includes the No. 1 seeds in both singles (Darien’s Michael Karr) and doubles (New Canaan’s Luke Crowley and Jack Moore).
Next: The final three rounds will all be played at the Wesleyan University courts, with the semifinals on Thursday, May 30, and the finals on Friday, May 31.
Class L Boys Lacrosse, Quarterfinals
No. 12 Newington (11-6) at No. 5 Darien (13-4), 4:30 p.m., Wednesday
The Blue Wave is coming off a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Wilton in the FCIAC semifinals, a defeat which ended Darien’s five-year reign as league champs. The Wave will look to get back on track against a Newington team which defeated Conard 7-4 in the qualifying round. This could be Darien’s final home game of the season.
Next: The Wave could be either on the road at No. 4 Simsbury (13-3) or back at home against No. 20 Ludlowe (9-8) for the quarterfinals on Saturday, June 1.
Class L Boys Volleyball, First Round
No. 14 Shelton (8-11) at No. 3 Darien (21-1), 6 p.m., Wednesday
Darien carries a 21-match winning streak into the state tournament, and has lost just one set since a 3-2 loss to Newtown in the season-opener on March 30. The Wave faced Shelton on April 18 and won 3-0.
Next: With a win, Darien would host another match in the quarterfinals against either No. 6 Danbury (14-7) or No. 11 Ridgefield (8-10) on Friday, May 31.
FCIAC Boys Golf Championship
At Fairchild Wheeler GC, 12:30 p.m., Thursday
Darien lost its final dual meet of the regular season and finished 15-1 overall, with Alex Gu and Calvin Smith then claiming a second straight Chappa Tournament championship at Longshore last Thursday. Darien, Greenwich, Staples and New Canaan appear to be the top contenders for the FCIAC title
Next: Darien will play in the CIAC DIv. I championships at 8 a.m., Monday, June 3, at Timberlin GC in Kensington.
Class L Outdoor Track and Field
At Middletown HS, 3 p.m., Thursday
Rain forced the postponement of both the Class L and M championships on Tuesday.
