Spring Stars: Darien athletes honored on All-FCIAC teams
The Blue Wave was again riding high in the spring of 2018, racking up three FCIAC championships and providing numerous highlights throughout the season.
Darien was well-represented on the All-FCIAC teams this season, as 51 players were recognized, and Coach of the Year honors were awarded to Jeff Brameier of the Wave’s boys lacrosse team and Mike Scott of the baseball team.
The Blue Wave had another tremendous campaign this spring, compiling a record of 22-1, winning a fifth consecutive FCIAC championship, and pushing their remarkable winning streak to 76 games before falling to Ridgefield 9-8 in the Class L final.
Darien placed eight players on the All-FCIAC team, including all four senior co-captains: Logan McGovern and Brian Minicus on attack, Andrew Darby on defense, and Blake Sommi as a short stick defensive midfielder.
Also making the First Team cut were seniors Jack Joyce at midfield, Matt Gould on defense, Sean Collins at goalie, and Tanner Strub on faceoffs.
Earning Second Team honors were senior long stick midfielder Charlie Olsen, and attackman Hudson Pokorny, midfielder Henri Pfeifle, and defenseman Tyler Strub, all juniors.
Sophomore midfielder Jackson Peters was named to the All-East squad.
The Darien Blue Wave went 17-5 and won their fifth straight FCIAC championship during another successful season.
Ten Wave players earned All-FCIAC honors, including eight who were named to the league’s First Team.
The First Teamers featured senior co-captains Emma Jaques and Katie Ramsay at midfield, and Christine Fiore on attack, along with junior middies Nicole Humphrey, Katie Elders and Charlotte Wittstock, and sophomore attacker Ashley Humphrey and sophomore midfielder Sarah Jaques.
Senior co-captain Kendall Wisinski, a midfielder, was named to the Second Team, and junior goalie Maggie Brooks received an honorable mention.
The Wave went 17-7 and won its second FCIAC championship in three years with a 7-4, eight-inning victory over Staples in the final at Stamford’s Cubeta Stadium.
Senior co-captains Justin Jordan, a center fielder and pitcher, and Sean O’Malley, a first baseman, and junior Henry Williams, a pitcher and shortstop, all received spots on the All-FCIAC First Team.
Senior pitcher Justin Van de Graaf and senior catcher Arthur Xanthos were both named to the All-East team, while seniors Harry Rayhill and Jackson Vaught received honorable mentions.
The Wave softball team went 8-13 in 2018 and qualified for the CIAC Class LL tournament.
Senior co-captain Hailey King, Darien’s starting shortstop, earned a place on the All-FCIAC First Team.
Darien went 14-4 this season, beating rival New Canaan twice, and finished as the runner-up in the CIAC Class L tournament.
Senior co-captain Bobby Neuner, the Wave’s ace singles player, was named to the All-FCIAC First Team, while the No. 1 doubles team of senior co-captain Neil Gandhi and sophomore Romano DeCaprio earned a place on the Second Team.
Junior Sergei Doroshin and freshman Alex de Castro each received an honorable mention.
The Darien girls tennis team was perfect during the regular season, sweeping the FCIAC competition to a 16-0 record. The Wave eventually finished 21-2 overall and was the runner-up in both the FCIAC and CIAC Class L tournaments.
Junior Lilly Ma, Darien’s No. 1 singles ace, led the list of Wave honorees, as she was named the conference’s Player of the Year.
Senior co-captain Emilia Callery, who played No. 2 singles, and senior co-captain Emily Neuner and junior Juliet Homes, the Wave’s No. 1 doubles team, also received First Team honors.
Freshman Katie Wiley earned an honorable mention.
The Blue Wave graduated nearly everyone from their starting lineup but still had a fantastic season, going 16-6 overall and qualifying for both the FCIAC and CIAC Class L playoffs.
Junior co-captains Tyler Herget and Piers Roofthooft both received All-FCIAC honors, with Herget named to the First Team and Roofthooft to the Second Team.
Sophomore Anthony Barsanti received an honorable mention.
The Wave’s boys golf team was perfect during the regular season with a record of 15-0, and finished as the runner-up in the CIAC Div. I tournament in June.
Sophomores Calvin Smith and Alex Gu earned All-FCIAC First Team honors, while senior Will Wilson, junior Blake Swiggett and sophomore Henry Sparkman were All-East players.
The Darien girls golf team finished the season 5-7 and junior Ashley Amirsakis received an All-FCIAC honorable mention.
Boys and Girls Track and Field
The Darien boys and girls track and field teams both had solid seasons in 2018, with the boys finishing eighth in the FCIAC and 11th in Class L, and the girls finishing 13th in the FCIAC and 15th in Class L.
Senior Michael Neary was the lone Blue Wave athlete on the All-FCIAC First Team, after he won the shot put championship at the conference finals.
