BOY’S VOLLEYBALL

It's a surprise they can keep any air in the ball. Because in the early going, match after match, the Wave is crushing it.

It isn't just about hitting, everyone who watches misses that, but all the little details.

— Tim Herget

“I think we are off to a great start this season,” said senior captain Tim Herget, with Darien blanking Masuk, Trumbull and Staples to go 3-0 overall, 2-0 FCIAC. “Picking up right where we left off last year skill-wise.”

League defending champion Darien beat traditional county power Staples 25-20, 25-17, 25-13 at home on Friday.

The Wreckers fall to 2-1, 1-1.

“We have a couple new guys out there, but I think our team chemistry is coming along great,” Herget said.

Stats were not yet available for the most recent match.

Through the first two matches, Tim Herget has a team-leading 20 kills, seniors Alex Preston 17, Sean McKay 16.

Preston has scored 22 service points, junior Tyler Herget 18, McKay 15, Tim Herget 10, senior Zak Swetye seven.

“All the guys want to learn and get better everyday,” said Tim Herget. “They want to win.”

Players include senior Sam McMullin, underclassmen John Parkhurst, Piers Roofthooft.

“And Coach (Laurie) LaRusso has been helping us so much to further our game and get better every day,” said Herget of the long-time many time champion coach for both girls, for a very long time, and boys for the past decade. “Everyone has a job out there on the court they love to do.”

Darien’s hitting it, hard. But it’s more than what blasts through the air.

“Some might be hitting, setting, or blocking, but everyone knows their role is critical,” Herget said. “It isn't just about hitting, everyone who watches misses that, but all the little details that are practiced are just as important.

“And everyone knows they are important to the team in some huge way.”
