Darien golfers shoot 297, finish second at Div. I championship
The Darien Blue Wave shot its lowest score ever in a state final and finished second at the CIAC Div. I boys golf championships Monday at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain.
The Wave’s score of 297, which featured four players shooting in the 70s, put Darien in the runner-up spot by just four strokes. Greenwich, which won the FCIAC title last Thursday, won the state championship with a score of 293.
Darien was led sophomores Alex Gu, who shot a 71 over 18 holes. Sophomore Calvin Smith was next for the Wave with a 73, while co-captains Will Wilson and Blake Swiggett shot 74 and 79, respectively. Freshman Thomas Ostberg finished with an 81.
The weather for the state championship was cold and windy in the morning, so with an early morning rain falling, the CIAC delayed the start of play. All teams teed off at 10 a.m. in a shotgun start.
Gu was steady all day, scoring two birdies and only two bogeys. Smith had a more colorful round, fighting back from an early triple bogey and recording a team high six birdies.
Both Gu and Smith were named to the All-State team and will compete next in the first annual CIAC State Open on Saturday, June 9, at Black Hall Club in Old Lyme. The event features the top three finishers and ties at all State boys and girls championships, as well as the top 12 boys and top three girls from the regular season based on scoring differential.
