The Darien girls lacrosse team took on a pair of out-of-state powers during the past three days and came away with a split, with each game being decided by one goal.

Squaring off against Bishop Ireton (Va) on Thursday at DHS, the Wave scored a dramatic 11-10 victory when Nicole Humphrey scored on a free position in overtime.

Two days later, Darien (7-1) played at the Gains for Brains Lacrosse Classic in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, and fell 10-9 to Eastport South Manor (NY). It was the Blue Wave’s first loss of the season and also their first loss at the Classic after winning their first three trips.

Both games were roller coaster rides.

Darien and Bishop Ireton were either tied or separated by a single goal for much of their contest.

When Bishop Ireton did managed to extend the gap to three goals at 6-3 with 17:02 remaining, the Wave stormed back with four straight goals to take the lead. Katie Elders scored the first two goals during that run before Maddie Joyce tied the game with an assist from Ashley Humphrey. Nicole Humphrey then put Darien ahead at 7-6, again with an assist from Ashley Humphrey with 11:38 remaining.

The Wave’s advantage was eventually 9-7, but Bishop Ireton went on a three-goal run, taking the lead on a Riley Casey tally with 1:49 remaining.

Nicole Humphrey then knotted the score when she cut in and took a perfect feed from Ashley Humphrey for a goal with 1:10 on the clock, setting up the OT victory.

Ashley Humphrey directed the offense with a goal and five assists, with Nicole Humphrey netting a hat trick and Katie Elders and Mason Maloney each scoring twice. Shea van den Broek, Sarah Jaques, and Joyce also scored.

For Bishop Ireton, Casey had two goals and three assists, Aubrey Williams had four goals, and Brianna Lantuh had a hat trick.

In Saturday’s game against Eastport South Manor, Darien rallied from a 7-2 halftime deficit, scoring the first six goals of the second half, but fell 10-9 on a goal by Samantha Filippi with 3.6 seconds remaining.

The game was part of the Gains for Brains Lacrosse Showcase which benefits the Making Headway Foundation.

Ashley Humphrey again had six points, this time collecting two goals and four assists, while van den Broek had three goals and an assist. Jaques, Nicole Humphrey, Joyce and Kit Arrix also scored, while goalie Shea Dolce collected 10 saves.
