Darien girls ice hockey rolls a 7 in shutout of Trumbull
The Darien girls hockey team hadn’t played an official game for two weeks when it returned to the ice on Saturday.
Apparently, that didn’t mean the Blue Wave needed to shake off any rust.
Freshman Kate Bellissimo scored the opening goal with assists from senior co-captains Kiki Tropsa and Elisa Maro and that opened the floodgates as the Wave rolled to a 7-0 shutout of the Trumbull/St. Joseph co-op at the Darien Ice House.
Darien netted six goals from six different players in the first period en route to the victory, which boosted their records to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the FCIAC.
Freshman Nelle Kniffen led the offense with three points on two goals and one assist, while Maro and junior Shea Van den Broek each had a goal and an assist, and Tropsa had two assists.
Also scoring for the Wave were senior co-captain Corinne Bevill and freshman Olivia Toscano, while junior Libby Branca and sophomore Colleen Cassidy had an assist apiece.
Trumbull (1-5 overall, 0-4 FCIAC) didn’t put much pressure on Darien defense, collecting just five shots, and sophomore goalie Hallie Kreppein saved all five to earn the shutout.
For the Eagles, goalie Tory Coffin made 11 saves against 18 shots.
Darien has a big match-up on deck as it hosts the unbeaten Greenwich Cardinals (7-0, 4-0) at 6:50 p.m., Tuesday.
