It was a rematch of last season’s state girls ice hockey final, but it was a player who wasn’t involved in that game who played the feature role.

Darien freshman Kate Bellissimo delivered a hat trick, including the game-winning goal in overtime, as the Blue Wave knocked off the Hamden Green Dragons, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Lou Astorino Rink in Hamden.

Bellissimo, who dramatically tied the game with just 9.3 seconds remaining in regulation, scored the winner 30 seconds into overtime. She took the shot in the slot after securing a pass out of the corner from junior Shea van den Broek.

Van den Broek assisted on all three goals, with senior co-captains Corinne Bevill and Kiki Tropsa assisting on Bellissimo’s first and second goals, respectively.

The victory boosted Darien’s overall record to 13-2-1 and the wave is currently ranked second in the state’s power point standings, behind first-place Greenwich and ahead of third-place New Canaan. Hamden, which dropped to 12-3-2, is seventh.

Darien and Hamden traded goals in the first and third period, but the Wave didn’t lead until the final goal in overtime.

In the first period, the Dragons’ Taylor Klesyk scored off a rebound at the 11:16 mark, but Darien responded at 12:35, when Bellissimo scored off assists from Bevill and van den Broek.

The defenses pitched shutouts in the second period, and for much of the third before the Hamden moved back in front on a power play goal with 53 seconds remaining. Demeri Carangelo found the net, with an assist from Maggie Gould, after Gould forced a turnover behind the Wave goal and passed the puck in front to Carangelo for the score.

Darien had an answer, however, after Tropsa used her hand to keep a clearing attempt in the zone. Her shot from the point was tipped by van den Broek, and Bellissimo was there to bang home the rebound and tie the game at 2-2.

The Wave then made quick work of the overtime period, which lasted just 30 seconds.

Darien goalie Hallie Kreppein, who collected 11 saves, came up big in the second and third periods, to help keep the game close.

Gianna Spino made 24 saves for the Dragons, as the Wave held a 27-13 advantage in shots on goal.
