The Darien Blue Wave will be in action this weekend at the Grip It and Rip It 7-on-7 football tournament at Daniel Hand in Madison.

Darien, which was 9-2 last fall, is one of 16 teams to participate in the event, which will feature representatives from the FCIAC, SCC, SWC, CCC and ECC.

Teams will be separated into four groups with games beginning at 2 p.m., Friday, June 28.

Teams will then be ranked No. 1 through No. 16 based on Friday’s results, and will take part in a double-elimination tournament starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 29.

Darien is in group one with Notre Dame-West Haven, East Lyme, and Notre Dame-Fairfield.

Group two will feature Class L champion Greenwich, North Haven, NFA and Masuk; group three is Daniel Hand, Berlin, Platt and Breanford; and group four includes Ludlowe, Middletown, Hamden and Foran.

Darien will also play in a second Grip It and Rip It tournament in a few weeks, as New Canaan hosts a two-day competition on Friday and Saturday, July 12-13.

Darien has two preseason scrimmages scheduled at Cheshire (Aug. 31) and Fairfield Prep (Sept. 6), before opening the 2019 campaign with a home game against Ludlowe at 7 p.m., Sept. 13.

The Blue Wave’s season also features a home game against Southington (Sept. 20), as well as a road game at Greenwich (Oct. 26). Darien will, of course, face rival New Canaan in the annual Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving Day.
