The Darien Blue Wave football team came out of its bye week and didn’t miss a beat.

Quarterback Cooper Hancock threw four touchdown passes, and Andrew Lucas reached the end zone three times — twice on the ground and once through the air — as the top-ranked Wave rolled over the Warde Mustangs 42-7 and improved to 6-0 this season.

Darien led 21-0 at halftime and 28-0 before Warde’s Will Stearns scored on a 36-yard pass from Joey Gulbin. The Wave defense held after that and Darien went on to add two more TDs in the fourth quarter.

Warde’s one touchdown was only the fourth allowed by Darien this season, and the defense limited Warde to just two first downs, and forced four turnovers.

Hancock played a starring role on offense, racking up 320 yards passing and connecting with three receivers for four touchdowns. Peter Bredahl had two TD catches, while Lucas and Will Rolapp had one TD reception each.

Lucas scored the opening touchdown, capping a 6-play, 52-yard drive with a 7-yard run up the middle.

Darien’s offense sputtered a bit in the rest of the first frame, but in the second, Hancock began to click, hitting Lucas for a 5-yard TD and Bredahl for 34-yard TD.

Bredahl added another touchdown early in the third quarter, scoring on an 11-yard pass from Hancock to make it 28-0.

Warde ended Darien’s shutout bid with the Gulbin-to-Stearns hookup later in the third

In the fourth, the Wave dialed long distance as Hancock found Rolapp for a 65-yard touchdown. Lucas then scored on a 2-yard run for the final score.
