Get ready for Darien vs. Staples round three.

The two FCIAC finalists advanced in the CIAC Class L field hockey tournament with shutout victories on Friday, as the Wave topped previously-unbeaten Hall 4-0 in Hartford, and Staples bumped fellow FCIAC team Norwalk 1-0 in Westport.

No. 6 Darien (18-2-1-0) will face No. 2 Staples (20-1-0-0) in the state semifinals on either Tuesday or Wednesday at a yet-to-determined neutral site.

The Wave first had to get past a tough Hall Warriors squad, which was unbeaten through its first

17 games. The Warriors (16-1-1-0) had scored 67 goals and allowed just five this season before Friday’s game.

Darien, however, had the edge for most of the quarterfinal contest, with the offense coming from its senior co-captains.

Katie Elders got the ball rolling with the game’s first goal, and Shea van den Broek then added the Wave’s second tally.

Bridget Mahoney and van den Broek added second-half goals for the final 4-0 score.

For van den Broek, the two goals give her seven in the past four postseason games.

Darien and Staples have met twice this season, including back on opening day, when the Wreckers scored a 2-1 victory at Darien High School. That was part of the Wave’s 2-2 start to the season, but they’ve been undefeated since, going 16-0-1-0 in the last 17 games.

The two rivals clashed again just last week, when Darien defeated Staples, 2-1, in the FCIAC championship game at Brien McMahon High School. It was the second straight conference title for the Blue Wave, which has won eight FCIAC crowns in the past 11 years.
