Darien boys lacrosse opens Class L playoffs with a lightning-shortened win over Newington.
The Darien Blue Wave rebounded from its loss in the semifinals, and survived a lightning storm, with a 19-1 victory over Newington in the first round of the CIAC Class L boys lacrosse tournament Wednesday at DHS.
No. 5 Darien (14-5) will now square off against No. 20 Ludlowe (10-8) in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m., Saturday, at DHS. Ludlowe topped No. 4 Simsbury 18-7 in the opening round.
The Wave’s first-round win feature a milestone for one Darien senior, as co-captain Hudson Pokorny scored the 100th goal of his career. He finished with three goals and three assists to lead the Blue Wave offensive attack.
Pokorny was one of 11 Darien players to score against Newington. Henri Pfeifle, Michael Minicus, Jackson Peters Jack Bogdan and Matthew Minicus each had two goals and one assist; Holt Matheis had one goal and two assists; Tommy Hellman and Charlie Walsh had a goal and an assist; and Jamison Moore, Carter Flanagan and Connor O'Malley each scored once.
The faceoff specialist corps, which featured Matt Freeman, Noah Dewbrey, Tighe Cummiskey, Chase Gulick, and Jesse Shutzman control the possession game for the Wave.
The defense was led by goalies Andy Demopoulos, Spencer Smith and Sander Schuddeboom with solid defensive efforts from Tyler Strub, Sam Cragin, Pierce Hoyda, Sam Wilson, Connor Olson, Blake Cellar, Will Nelson, Reilly Warble, Pete Graham, Bruce Ferguson and Matt Cavoli.
The game was shortened by lightning which hit the area in the evening.
