The Darien boys lacrosse team opened up its FCIAC title defense with a 22-0 shutout of the Westhill Vikings on Wednesday in Stamford.

The win, which saw the Blue Wave score 12 goals in the first quarter, gives Darien an overall record of 2-0 heading into its Friday night showdown against the Torrey Pine Falcons, the top-ranked team from California.

The Darien-Torrey Pines contest is historic, as it will be the first boys lacrosse game played under the lights at DHS. The game starts at 6:30 p.m., and will be carried live on the HAN Network.

In their final tune-up for the East versus West battle, the Wave had 15 players contribute to the scoring against Westhill.

Senior co-captain Logan McGovern registered a game-best seven points on two goals and five assists, while senior co-captain Brian Minicus and junior Hudson Pokorny each had a hat trick. Senior co-captain Blake Sommi also had three points on two goals and one assist.

Also scoring for Darien were Michael Minicus (2 goals), Charlie Walsh (1 goal, 2 assists), Ryan O'Neil (1 goal, 1 assist), Ethan Dewbrey (1 goal, 1 assist), and Holt Matheis (1 goal, 1 assist).

Senior Brandon Yarish and freshmen Jamison Moore, Matthew Stein, and Matheis all registered their first career points.

Darien was nearly perfect at the faceoff X, with Tanner Strub going 12-for-13, Matt Freeman going 12-for-12, and Jackson McNear going 1-for-1.

Goalies Sean Collins and freshman Andy Demopoulos combined for the shutout.
