After struggling to find some offense in its last game, the Darien boys ice hockey team exploded for seven goals in two periods and romped to a 7-0 shutout of the St. Joseph Cadets Monday night at The Rinks at Shelton.

Six players scored and 11 had points as the Blue Wave improved top 5-8-1 overall and 4-1-1 in  the FCIAC. While Darien is still below the .500 overall, their conference record ranks second in the league standings with nine points.

St. Joseph, a perennial playoff contender, has struggled mightily this season and is now 4-9 overall and 3-4 in the FCIAC.

The Wave offense was in high gear against the Cadets, peppering the net with 45 shots with seven hitting the mark.

The first period was actually scoreless but Darien broke through for three in the second to take control.

Will Dickson broke the ice with a goal, assisted by James Gregor, at 4:57 of the second period, and Matt Daileader and Gregory scored 1:09 apart late in the frame for the lead.

Gregory and Parker McLane each finished with three points to lead Darien. Gregory scored twice and dished out one assist, while McLane had a goal and two helpers.

Fin Batson had a goal and an assist; Conor McCarthy had two assists; and Dickson, Daileader and Will Johnston each scored one goal. Rob Stewart, Brian Zaffino, Hudson Pokorny, Carr Noonan and Max Sharp had one assist apiece.

Goalie Henri Pfeifle faced and stopped 14 shots, while St. Joe’s netminder Bill Brady collected 38 saves.
