Former Darien cross country stars run at college Pre-National meet
Darien Blue Wave cross country alumni Armstrong Noonan and Alex Ostberg competed together for the first since entering college at the Wisconsin Pre-National meet on Saturday
Ostberg, a senior at Stanford, placed eighth in 23:57 on the 8K course at the University of Wisconsin. Battling a foot injury, Noonan, a junior at Yale, was 237th in 27:25.
Ostberg and Noonan are the two most decorated distance runners in DHS history.
Ostberg was a six-time high school All-American and six-time All-State athlete. In 2014, he was the National Champion in the 5,000 during the Outdoor Track season with a time of 14:16.61.
Ostberg was also the 2013 and 2014 Connecticut Gatorade Cross Country Athlete of the Year. He holds 5K course records at Waveny Park (14:47) and Wickham Park (14:58), and also holds indoor track records at DHS in the 1,600, 3,200, 2 mile, 4x800 and distance medley relay races.
Ostberg is the outdoor track record-holder in the 1,600, 3,000, 3,200, 5,000, 4x800 and Distance Medley Relay. Ostberg's marks in the 2-mile and DMR indoor and the 3,200 and 5,000 outdoor are Connecticut State Records.
He also won the 3,000 at the prestigious Penn Relays in 2015. During the 2017 Cross Country season Ostberg was 16th at the NCAA Division Cross Country Championships for Stanford, earning All-American honors.
Noonan was a 3-time All-American and 7-time All State athlete for the Blue Wave. He holds indoor track records in the 1 mile, 3000, 4 x 800, Distance Medley Relay and 4 x 1 mile relay. He holds outdoor track records in the 1-mile, 2-mile, 4 x 800 and DMR races. Noonan's indoor DMR record is also a state record.
Noonan and Ostberg most notably combined to run the first and last legs of the DMR that placed second at Nationals during the 2014 outdoor track season and second at Nationals during the 2015 indoor track season.
