Wave by the numbers: Darien tops Newtown in a Football Alliance showdown

The Darien football team broke open a tie game late and defeated Newtown in a rematch of the 2019 CIAC Class LL final last Friday, and this week’s Wave by the numbers focuses on the key stats and moments from what is Connecticut’s game of the year so far.

Score of the Darien football team’s victory over Newtown on Friday night at Darien High School. The Blue Wave and Nighthawks were tied 14-14 after three quarters, but Darien scored twice in the fourth quarter to take the game.

Victory over Newtown. The Wave was winless in its first four matchups with the Nighthawks, losing during the regular season in 2005 and 2006, and then in the 2018 Class LL quarterfinals and 2019 Class LL final.

Darien’s record through three games, as the Wave holds the No. 1 ranking in the GameTime CT Top 10 poll. Five FCIAC teams are 3-0, including New Canaan, St. Joseph, Norwalk and Wilton.

Newtown’s ranking after the loss. The Nighthawks, who are 2-1, dropped two spots in the GameTimeCT poll, trailing No. 1 Darien, No. 2 St. Joseph, No. 3 New Canaan and No. 4 Southington. Newtown will look to get back in the win column when it hosts Ridgefield at 7, Friday.

Total rushing yards on 29 carries for Newtown, an average of just 2.7 yards per carry, as the Darien defense was superb against the run. The Wave allowed just 31 rushing yards and pitched a shutout in the second half.

Points allowed by Darien’s defense this season. Opposing offenses have reached the end zone just three times, as the Wave defeated Warde 41-8 and Central 47-0 before the win over Newtown.

Yards from scrimmage for Wave running back Tighe Cummiskey, who scored a pair of touchdowns. Cummiskey rushed 21 times for 94 yards and caught two passes for 31 yards. He scored on touchdown runs of one and 14 yards.
