Wave by the numbers: Darien’s fall sports teams ready to roll

With the high school sports season kicking off, it’s time for a fresh look at Darien’s fall sports with a new Wave by the numbers.

Boys golf is already in action, and the rest of Darien’s teams will have their first games, matches and meets during the next few days.


Days since the last official CIAC football game for Darien, which hosts Fairfield-Warde at at 2 p,m. The contest is the first game, outside of last year’s private league season, for new head coach Mike Forget, who was the Wave’s defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2019.


Date of the Wave’s showdown with Newtown, the team it faced in the thrilling 2019 Class LL championship game. The Nighthawks won 13-7 on the final play of the game, as Newtown captured its first state title since 1992. The Wave was also beaten by Newtown in the 2018 quarterfinals.


Appearances in the state finals in the last seven seasons for the Darien football team. The Wave won three championships during that span, beating Shelton (2015), Ridgefield (2016), and Greenwich (2017).


Record of the Darien field hockey team last fall. The Wave was impressive but was unable to take home the FCIAC West championship when its starting varsity lineup was quarantined during the playoffs due to COVID protocols. Greenwich, which Darien had beaten twice during the regular season, defeated the Wave 4-0 in the FCIAC West quarterfinals and went on take the division crown.


Consecutive FCIAC championships for the Blue Wave field hockey team. Darien defeated Wilton in the 2017 final and Staples in the 2018 final, and the Wave and Wreckers were declared co-champs after playing to a scoreless tie in 2019.


Record of the Darien volleyball team in 2020. Three of those losses came against Greenwich, which was undefeated, but two of the matches went the full five sets. The Cardinals won a seesaw FCIAC West final 27-25, 26-28, 25-21, 24-26, 15-12.


Non-conference matches to open Darien’s volleyball schedule. The Wave plays at Brookfield on Thursday, before hosting the ECC’s Woodstock Academy on Friday, Sept. 10, and perennial state playoff contender Newtown on Monday, Sept. 13. Darien will play at John Jay (NY) on Saturday, Sept. 25.


Record of the Darien girls volleyball team last year. The Wave was 9-0 during the regular season and defeated Stamford 5-0 in the FCIAC West quarterfinals before falling to New Canaan in the final.


The Wave’s record against rival New Canaan in girls soccer last year. All four games were decided by one goal, with Darien winning 2-1, 1-0, and 3-2 during the regular season, and the Rams winning 2-1 in the FCIAC West final.
