New Canaan’s victory over rival Darien in the annual Turkey Bowl football game takes center stage in this week’s Wave by the numbers, as we break down the Thanksgiving game as well as a few updated stats and trends from the past few years.

Darien will be looking to get back on the winning side in the state tournament, which got underway on Wednesday evening.

20-0

Score of New Canaan’s victory over rival Darien in the annual Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving morning in Darien. The Rams grabbed a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and added one more touchdown in the third quarter to get the win.

3

Consecutive Turkey Bowl wins for the Rams. New Canaan won 27-0 in 2017, and 17-14 last year. In all three seasons, Darien entered the Turkey Bowl unbeaten. Darien had won five straight on Thanksgiving from 2012 to 2016.

59-32-2

New Canaan’s overall advantage in the rivalry with Darien, which began back in 1928.

37

Straight wins at home for Darien before the loss in the Turkey Bowl. That streak dated back to October 2012, and included two playoffs wins at DHS during the 2017 state championship run.

31

Yards on a touchdown pass from Drew Pyne to Christian Sweeney to open New Canaan’s scoring in the Turkey Bowl. Pyne then scored on a 13-yard run, and Christian Carson had a 3-yard TD run for the Rams’ other touchdowns.

63

Yards on a run by Darien senior co-captain Sam Wilson, who had the Blue Wave’s longest play of the game. Wilson had just intercepted a pass at the Darien 1-yard line, and the back-to-back plays could have been a turning point, but the Wave stalled and turned the ball over on downs.

97

Receiving yards on five catches for Darien senior Jackson Peters. Peters leads the Wave with 35 catches, 667 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns this season.

3-8

Record of undefeated teams in the Turkey Bowl since 2009. The three wins were all from Darien, when the two rivals were both undefeated from 2014 to 2016. New Canaan has beaten undefeated Blue Wave teams in each of the last three seasons.

58-4

Record of the Blue Wave since the start of the 2014 season. In addition to the three losses to New Canaan, Darien’s only other loss was a 25-15 defeat in Newtown in last year’s Class LL quarterfinals. The Wave has three state championships during the past five years, winning from 2015 through 2017.

No. 3

Class LL tournament seed for Darien, which hosted Greenwich in the quarterfinals yesterady, Wednesday. The result of that game can be found at DarienTimes.com. If the Wave tops Greenwich again, they will advance to the semifinals on Monday, Dec. 9, and play either at No. 2 Southington (9-1) or home against No. 7 Ridgefield (8-2).

27-21

Score of Darien’s win over Greenwich at Cardinal Stadium on Nov. 2. The Wave took a 21-0 lead in that game before Greenwich rallied to tie it at 21-21 late in the third quarter. Darien then took the lead for good when quarterback Peter Graham hit Peters with a 19-yard touchdown pass with 7:25 remaining.
