Spring has sprung.

In this week’s Wave by the numbers, we’ll take a look at Darien’s sports teams for the upcoming season, which gets underway on Saturday.

4/2 Opening day of the 2022 spring sports season. Three Darien teams will be in action with the baseball and softball teams at home. The Wave softball team will host Newtown at 1, and the baseball team will host Stratford at 2. The boys volleyball team will play at Farmington at 1.

18-3 Record of the Darien girls lacrosse team last spring. The Blue Wave lost to New Canaan twice during the regular season and then in the FCIAC final before defeating the Rams 8-4 in the Class L semis. Darien then defeated Ludlowe 14-8 for its 19th state championship.

4/19 Date of the girls lacrosse showdown between New Canaan and Darien on the Blue Wave’s home turf.

19-1 Record of the Darien boys lacrosse team in 2021. The Blue Wave was 15-0 in the regular season and defeated Staples 15-3 in the FCIAC final. Darien’s season ended when it was upset by Fairfield Prep 14-10 in the Class L quarterfinals.

9-0 Darien’s advantage in the second half of its FCIAC final win over Staples. The Wave has won 18 conference championships since 1992, including six of the last seven.

4 Games against out-of-state opponents for the Blue Wave, after a 2021 season which was limited to in-state foes. Darien will play at Chaminade (NY) on April 9, and Yorktown (NY) on April 16, before hosting Manhassett (NY) on April 23. The Wave also faces St. Anthony’s (NY) on May 7 at DHS.

23-0 Record of the Darien boys volleyball team in 2021. The Wave captured FCIAC and CIAC Class L championships and dropped just four sets during the season.

3-1 Score of Darien’s victory over Enfield in the CIAC Class L boys volleyball final. The Wave dropped the first set but came back to win 18-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-16.

2 C hampionships for the Darien boys tennis team, which defeated Staples 4-0 for the FCIAC title, and then went 3-0 in the CIAC Class L tournament to win a state crown.

3 F CIAC titles in five seasons for the Darien girls tennis team. The Wave won back-to-back in 2016 and 2017, and was the runner-up in 2018.

12-9 Record of the Darien softball team in 2021. The Blue Wave had a 10-7 regular season, before splitting four games in the FCIAC and Class LL tournaments.

6-15 Record of the Darien baseball team last spring. The Blue Wave was 4-13 during the regular season and was seeded 14th in the FCIAC, but scored a pair of upsets, beating No. 3 Staples 8-6 in eight innings, and No. 6 Westhill 14-3, to reach the semifinals.
