UConn women's basketball walk-on Autumn Chassion set to transfer

UConn guard Autumn Chassion has entered the transfer portal and will not return next season, the school announced Monday.

Chassion, a freshman walk-on, appeared in only eight games and scored eight points before she was shut down with shin splints.

“Autumn is a really bright person and has a great future ahead of her,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said in a statement. “We wish Autumn and her family the best as she continues her collegiate career.”

As a walk-on, Chassion’s roster spot wasn’t guaranteed for next season. With 14 players under scholarship for 2021-22, it’s unlikely Chassion would’ve received much playing time.

Chassion, a lifelong Huskies fan, took to Instagram to bid farewell to the school.

“I would like to thank UConn for accepting me, taking me in, and allowing me to play the game I love,” she wrote, while thanking the coaches, team staff, teammates and more. “Lord knows I hate to go, but the lasting memories and lifelong friendships formed make it all worth it. This indeed was the strangest year on record, but I wouldn’t change it for the world!

The Lafayette, La., native was a high school valedictorian who joined the program last August after turning down multiple low-level Division I offers.

She is the second player from last season’s team to transfer, joining sophomore guard Anna Makurat, who plans to pursue a professional career overseas.
