LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky's Rupp Arena is getting a new name.

The 44-year-old home court of Kentucky's men's basketball team will be called Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center. Under the 14-year rights agreement with the Lexington-area bank, the university's marketing partner will receive $1.5 million annually.

Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart said in a release that it was “essential” to preserve the name of legendary Wildcats coach Adolph Rupp on the facility out of respect for his achievements and his family. The AD added that the agreement enables the school to pursue its goal of building an elite department “and empower young people to grow us as students, athletes and people.”

The deal was announced Thursday between the bank and JMI Sports, multimedia rights partner for the school and Lexington Center Corporation. The convention center, which is undergoing expansion, will be called Central Bank Center.
