Darien's Cornell, Vermont claim America East lacrosse crown

Darien’s Ryan Cornell collected 10 saves to help the Vermont men’s lacrosse team win its first America East championship with a 15-10 victory over Albany Saturday in Catonsville, Md.

Cornell, the Catamounts’ senior goalie, also made 15 saves in Thursday’s semifinals when Vermont defeated Stony Brook 10-7.

With the victory, Vermont earned a bid to the NCAA Division I tournament. The brackets will be announced at 9 p.m., Sunday.

Cornell, a 2017 graduate of Darien High, has a .524 save percentage and a record of 9-4 this season.

The Catamounts’ roster includes several Connecticut players: Cornell and Liam Rischmann from Darien, Andrew Bauersfeld and Tim Norton from New Canaan, Connor Boyle from Fairfield Prep, Dobson Cooper from Staples, and Nick Alviti from New Fairfield.
