The bats came alive for the Darien baseball team, which picked up its first win of the season, 17-9, over Greenwich on Friday at DHS.

Frank Drugge hit a three-run home run in the first inning to get the Blue Wave started and they went on to bang out 14 hits and score multiple runs in five of six innings.

Senior Jake Horowitz reached base five times, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and walk, scoring three times, and driving in two. Andrew Briganti was 3-for-4 with a walk and four runs scored.

The victory gave Darien a 1-2 record through the first week of the season. The Blue Wave was no-hit in a 6-0 loss to Staples on opening day, and then had a rally fall short in a 7-4 loss to Wilton on Wednesday.

Darien scored four runs in the second inning and three in the third to go up 10-1 on Greenwich. The Cardinals closed the gap to 10-6 in the top of the fifth, but the Wave added a five-spot in the home half of that inning ro push the lead back up to nine.

Darien will play at Westhill on Monday, before returning home to take on Norwalk on Wednesday.
