Chevannes, Russell lead Darien girls track and field in FCIAC

Chelsi Chevannes had a pair of second-place finishes in the jumps and Maggie Russell was the runner-up in the pole vault to lead Darien at the FCIAC girls outdoor track and field championships last Tuesday in Danbury.

Their performances helped the Blue Wave finish sixth as a team, scoring 46.5 points. Staples was the league champion with 114 points, followed by Danbury (108) and Ridgefield (89) in the top three.

Chevannes, a senior, took second in the high jump at 5 feet, with St. Joseph senior Nia Christie finishing first at 5 feet, 4 inches.

In the triple jump, Chevannes hit 32 feet, 9.75 inches to finish as runner-up. Staples’ sophomore Ava Harvey won at 34 feet, 0.75 inches.

Chevannes was also sixth in the long jump (15-03.75).

Russell, also a senior, finished second at 8 feet in the pole vault. She was one of three athletes to clear eight feet, with Staples’ junior Isabella Blend first, and Brien McMahon junior Kiera Henry third.

Darien senior Natalie Volz was fourth in the pole vault at 7 feet, 6 inches.

Also in the jumps for the Wave, Joclynn Tyler was seventh in the long jump (15-02.25), and Brooke Dolan was eighth in the high jump (4-10).

Junior Mairead Clas had the Wave’s best finish on the track when she took third place in the 1,600-meter run with a personal best time of 5:04.29.

Camilla Lash and Katie Chandler each had an eighth-place finish - Lash in the 200-meter dash (27.29) and Chandler in the 800-meter run (2:30.69).

Darien’s 4x400 relay team of Charlotte Sulger, Lash, Alexis Lyons, and Brooke Dolan was seventh in 4:19.46.
