Carpenter, Belcastro earn top two seeds in Met Junior Championship
Ben Carpenter of Darien and Rowayton’s Connor Belcastro were each among the 16 players that qualified for match play in the 102nd MGA Met Junior Championship at Southward Ho Country Club in West Bay Shore, N.Y.
Carpenter, a rising Brunswick School senior, earned the No. 1 seed by shooting a 3-under-par 139 over the tournament’s first two stroke play rounds. The top 16 advanced match play. Belcastro, a 2019 Brunswick graduate, who won the Met Junior Championship last summer at Watertown Golf Club, finished second in Wednesday’s stroke play qualifying with a 1-under-par 141.
Jackson Fretty, a 2019 Greenwich High graduate, placed eighth in stroke play, carding a 145 over two rounds on Wednesday.
Carpenter, 18, shot a 33 on the front nine, registering birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6. He also posted birdies on the 10th and 15 holes on his way to shooting a 69.
His second round included three birdies and an eagle on the second hole. Belcastro, who like Carpenter played on a championship Brunswick team this past spring, shot a 66 in the opening round and a 75 in the second. He eagled the second hole in the first round and recorded five birdies.
Carpenter will play 16th-seeded Stephen Sul of Old Bridge, N.J., in the first round of match play on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at Southward Ho Country Club.
Belcastro, seeded second, will face No. 15 Saurav Bhasin from Plainview, N.Y., in the first round on Thursday at 8:02 a.m. Fretty, the ninth seed, plays eighth-seeded Edmund Broderick of Bayonne, N.J., in the opening round at 7:38 a.m.
Fretty shot a 71 and 74, respectively in stroke play.
