The season of giving is upon us — and with that comes peak post office mayhem. Add in this year’s labor shortages and service slowdowns overwhelming the U.S. Postal Service, and it's even more critical to ship packages punctually to ensure they make it under their intended Christmas trees by Sunday, Dec. 25.

The USPS 2022 holiday shipping deadlines serve as a gentle reminder to stop procrastinating — but as with most deadlines, the earlier the better. Notably, you’ll need to send off your goods three days earlier than last year to meet the service's ground shipping delivery cutoff dates (Dec. 17), but you can ship via Priority Mail Express service as late as Dec. 23.

USPS Christmas deadlines 2022

As outlined by the Postal Service, these are the recommended send-by-dates for delivery before Sunday, Dec. 25. (Note: This excludes Hawaii and Alaska.)

  • Retail Ground: Saturday, Dec. 17
  • First-Class Mail: Saturday, Dec. 17
  • Priority Mail: Monday, Dec. 19
  • Priority Mail Express: Friday, Dec. 23

For Alaska and Hawaii addresses, packages must be shipped via Priority Mail Express Service by Dec. 21, or Priority Mail/First-Class Mail by Dec. 17.  (The Retail Ground Service deadline for Alaska was Dec. 2.)

Holiday shipping deadlines for international and military mail can be found on the service's website.

USPS holiday hours 2022

Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, a day that post office locations are normally closed. USPS will also shut its doors on the Mondays after Christmas (Dec. 26) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 2), according to the carrier. Regular mail will not be picked up or delivered on Christmas Day, but Priority Mail Express mail will be delivered.

Local USPS post offices are expected to be open on Saturday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve), but check your specific location as hours may vary. Blue collection boxes “may be picked up earlier than usual” so it’s recommended to drop off mail before noon.
