On the market: Private island in Darien

An exclusive home is for sale in Darien–so exclusive, it sits on its own island.

On the market for $17,500,000, the house at 20 Juniper Rd. sits on 7.1 acres of property; six of those acres make up an island and the rest is access on Juniper Road.

According to toptenrealestatedeals.com, the property isn't just a luxury it's a piece of history too.

"The island was a site for commerce long ago, and until the late 1990s, it still had the remains of an old commercial dock used for transporting hay by barge to New York City back when city transportation consisted largely of horse and buggy," the site writes.

"In the early 1800s, there were bottle dumps on the property - old glass bottles, metal pieces and pottery shards. Many of these artifacts have been found all over the property and some are kept in the current house."

The 11-room house is listed with William Pitt. It features two limestone fireplaces, a gourmet kitchen with breakfast room, a flagstone terrace360 degree water views, a basement with a billiard room, an AstroTurf play room, a  pool/spa, an outdoor shower and a dock with storage for kayaks and paddle boards.

It's also a good home for wildlife enthusiasts. Toptenrealestatedeals.com writes that the owners have photographed bald eagles, blue herons, great egrets, turkeys, minks and foxes.

This isn't the only private island for sale in the area. Tavern Island in Norwalk has been on the market for some time now at a listing price of $10.995 million.

According to real estate site, Zillow, Tavern Island in Norwalk, Conn. was used as a speakeasy during Prohibition. It was owned by Billy Rose, a lyricist known for the song "Me and my Shadow," and Marylin Monroe is said to have partied there.
