DARIEN — Three streets in Darien comprise a neighborhood known as the “Bump-a-long,” a name given to this section of town for its many speed bumps. It’s important to heed those speed bumps when driving, especially because there are many children in the area, but metaphorically speaking prospective home-buyers should run not walk to the Federal colonial at 3 Waterbury Lane.

It’s not just that the house is located on a cul-de-sac in a prime setting close to town and the train, and walking distance to the public middle and high schools, but it is also positioned on a 1.13-acre level lot that enjoys much privacy. It is an open and wooded property that is partially fenced and it adjoins preserved open space that is part of the neighborhood association and therefore will never be built upon, the agent said.

One of the most attractive features is its price tag relative to its square footage. The house is on the market for $1,945,000 and with 5,595 square feet of living space that breaks down to $348 per square foot whereas the average cost per square foot for a house in Darien is $550, according to the Sotheby’s market tracker report released in November the listing agent said. And consider this: There is another 1,200 square feet in the unfinished basement just waiting for any number of possibilities. There is definitely no wanting for space. The house is also a great value for the location, the agent said.

This white shingle house was built in 1996 and was given a great floor plan and flow from room to room, perfect for casual living and formal entertaining. It was also given high ceilings and over-sized windows throughout. There are three fireplaces - in the formal living room, the family room, and the master bedroom suite, and other features include a huge kitchen, and a finished third floor containing two rooms with flexible use.

As curb appeal goes, the front façade of this house is attractive with its bump-out bay, recessed covered front entrance, third floor elliptical window, second floor shutters, and triangular gable accentuated by large-scale dentil molding. The front door opens into the two-story foyer and true center hall.

The formal living room has a marble fireplace with a yellow brick firebox and a decorative white wood mantel, a bump-out bay, and a wide arched entryway flanked by columns that provides access into the formal dining room. The dining room has a bump-out bay and chair railing. The gourmet kitchen features a center island with a beveled granite counter, a Palladium window, two sinks, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a six-burner range top. One peninsula counter serves also as a breakfast bar.

The kitchen is open to a good-size breakfast room or casual dining room, which has two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors to the stone patio with a brick sitting wall and the backyard. The kitchen is also open to the family room, which has a brick fireplace and French doors to the same patio.

There is a back staircase that leads to a private en suite bedroom that would be great as a guest or au pair suite. The remaining five bedrooms are on the second floor. The master suite has a tray ceiling, two walk-in closets, and a marble fireplace with a mantel depicting two flush, fluted columns. In the master bath there is a skylight, jetted tub, shower, and long double vanity. Two other bedrooms are en suite and the remaining two share an adjoining bath.

On the third floor there is wall-to-wall carpeting and a built-in window seat. One room could be a kids’ hang-out room and the other a play or game or recreation room.
