On the Market: Don’t be fooled by this 1971 Darien house
DARIEN — Don’t be fooled by the outward appearance of the house at 27 Pheasant Run, which looks like a typical colonial built in a particular era but inside it has both traditional and contemporary floor plans.
Don’t be fooled by the photographs either. The skill of the professional who took the photos is not in question but those images can be a bit deceiving. The square footage of the living space just doesn’t seem to translate well in print. This is a house that a person should walk through to get a true sense of its size and flow from room to room.
The taupe-colored house with white trim was built in 1971 and it underwent a major renovation in 2001, which increased the living space to its current 5,442 square feet; 4,325 on the main levels and another 1,117 in the basement. During that renovation project the formal dining room was extended, the great room was added as was a new sunroom or garden room, and the rear mahogany deck was expanded. A surround sound system was installed in the great room and on the rear deck.
Another project, this one in 2014, finished the basement giving it new carpeting, a fresh coat of paint, and creating a great entertainment and recreation space with a service bar, play or game room, media or television area, and there is an office as well. This lower level has an amazing amount of storage and a workshop that can be accessed from the basement or the two-car attached garage, which has Tek flooring.
The house enjoys a great amount of privacy. It sits at the end of a cul-de-sac on a level property of almost an acre and a half. A long driveway lined in Belgium block leads to a slate path that “escorts” visitors to the covered front entrance, which features two fluted Ionic columns and a faux balcony above. The front door is flanked by sidelights and opens to the foyer with a marble floor.
The formal living room has a marble fireplace and chair railing. In the library or den on the other side of the foyer there is a floor-to-ceiling red brick fireplace with a raised hearth. This room also has built-in bookshelves on two walls. The living room and library have bay windows. French doors separate the living and dining rooms.
A second set of French doors sit between the dining room and the sun or garden room, the latter of which has walls of windows, several skylights, and a door to the sizable deck and the attractively landscaped backyard, through which a small stream courses.
In the kitchen there are many features including white lacquer cabinetry, a wood floor, Ubatuba granite counters, a ceramic tile backsplash with some decorative tiles throughout, a breakfast bar, built-in desk area, and high-end appliances including Dacor range top and double wall ovens, Sub-Zero refrigerator and Bosch dishwasher. One set of cabinets has beveled and leaded glass doors.
