Volleyball roundup: Warriors win second straight league title; Hatchets, Pirates win

KINDE – The North Huron varsity volleyball team captured its second straight league title with a sweep of Owendale-Gagetown on Thursday night. The Warriors won, 25-18, 25-12, 25-17.

For the Warriors, Mollie Zaleski had 17 points, four aces, 35 assists and one kill. Paige Koroleski had seven points, three aces and seven kills. Sydnee Sutliff had six points, three aces, eight kills and one block. Lucy Wiley chipped in six points, two aces and seven kills. Karrigan Schipinski had five points and one ace. Emma Taylor had six kills.

The Warriors open district play on Monday, Nov. 2, at Ubly against Owen-Gage.

Hatchets top Red Hawks

CASS CITY – The Bad Axe varsity volleyball team closed out league play with a win over the Cass City Red Hawks on Thursday night. The Hatchets won, 27-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, and finish with a league record of 9-3.

Leading the way for the Hatchets were Katherine Himmel with four aces, 13 kills and five blocks, Kate Clancy with 11 kills and Nicole Yageman with nine kills and five blocks. Callie Engler had seven kills, Camryn Affer had 34 assists, and Alayna Engler had 27 digs.

The Hatchets open district play on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Laker against the winner of Monday’s Laker-Cass City matchup.

Pirates fall to visiting Brown City

HARBOR BEACH – The Harbor Beach varsity volleyball team lost in four sets to the visiting Brown City Green Devils on Thursday night. Brown City won, 22-25, 23-25, 17-25, 12-25.

Leaders for the Pirates were Leandra Wolschleger with 13 kills, two blocks and 21 digs and Brenna Bischer with five kills, one block and 14 digs. Maya Pfaff had four kills and two blocks, Josie Kozfkay chipped in four blocks, two kills and three digs, Taryn Arntz had 15 assists and four digs, Karlee Guza had 19 digs, Faith Boynton had nine assists, and Kenzie Knoblock had two kills and two digs.

The Pirates end the regular season 13-10 overall and 8-3 in league play. Harbor beach opens district play against Unionville-Sebewaing on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Laker.

Lakers fall to Caro, raise money on ‘Dig Pink’ night

PIGEON – The Laker varsity volleyball team lost to visiting Caro on Thursday night, 12-25, 25-20, 18-25, 13-25.

“It was a really fun game, and our Dig Pink night,” Laker head coach Karen Smith said. “The Lady Lakers earned $951 for their Dig Pink event. We had such a great outpouring of help from our community. There were baskets and baked goods galore. Our junior high coaches and teams did an awesome job at running the raffles and bake sale.”

Leading the Lakers in kills was Leah Truemner with nine, Mandy Arnott with seven, and Jordyn Wisenbaugh with five. Wisenbaugh and Arnott each had three blocks. Ryleigh Tate earned eight assists and Chloe O'Connor had six. Ashley Kuhl hit the floor for 22 digs, Arnott had 18, Truemner had 17, and Sydney Richmond and O'Connor each had 10.

The Lakers open up district play at home against Cass City on Monday, Nov. 2.

Caseville falls at CPS

CARSONVILLE – The Caseville varsity volleyball team lost to host Carsonville-Port Sanilac on Thursday night, 25-11, 25-4 and 25-6.

The Eagles open district play on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Ubly against the winner of the North Huron-Owendale-Gagetown matchup on Monday.
