'Best for Darien' releases platform for November election
The following platform was released this week by Best for Darien, the Republican party's slate, which includes incumbents First Selectman Jayme Stevenson, Selectman Susan Marks and Selectman Kip Koons. The slate for Darien Moving Forward, the Democrat slate including Stevenson's challenger, Rob Richards, who currently serves as selectman, incumbent Marc Thorne, and newcomer Pamela Sparkman, will be published upon receipt.
Darien is a well-managed town with generous and discerning taxpayers. Residents and small businesses alike have invested heavily in the long-term success of our community. Our town’s unique character and exceptional people are what make Darien an outstanding place to live and raise a family.
Unfortunately, unprecedented fiscal challenges at the state level (brought on by one of the most underfunded public pension systems in the nation) may result in reductions of state support for our schools and important infrastructure projects. We will need to become even more prudent and financially self-sufficient as we are asked to take on new state mandates.
To sustain our excellent schools and continue to improve our town for families, seniors and local businesses in the face of these extraordinary challenges — we need trusted, experienced leaders. We need leaders who can set priorities and protect Darien’s strong financial position. We will be forced to do more with less in the coming years, and that will require a team with experience in Managing Risks.
The “Best for Darien” Team: First Selectman Jayme Stevenson, Selectman Susan Marks and Selectman Kip Koons, has nearly 100 years of combined business and community service experience. We understand the appropriate role of government in our everyday lives. We will continue to promote policies that Ensure a Sustainable Darien. We will balance the needs and wishes of our residents with our ability to pay. Darien deserves leaders who will focus on long-term financial sustainability while remaining committed to excellent schools, government efficiency and transparency, and preservation of our natural environment.
The “Best for Darien” team is also poised to Seize Opportunities. Whether they are strategic land acquisitions like the 16 acres at Ox Ridge Hunt Club, business and housing redevelopment projects, Clean Energy Community initiatives (such as converting our streetlights to energy-saving LED technology), or other improvement projects— our team will guide Darien with a steady, experienced hand and engage the community in a transparent, open decision-making process.
Finally, our team is committed to Making Life Better for All in Darien. We are dedicated to continually improving pedestrian safety, commuter convenience, and supporting our vulnerable citizens when they need us most. We will continue to champion business growth and strategic housing development to strengthen our grand list. We will also continue to take a leadership role in regional government with Jayme Stevenson serving as Chairman of WestCOG. We are passionate about our town and its future—we simply want nothing but the Best for Darien.
