DANBURY — The pre-trial hearing of a local teen accused of fatally striking a pedestrian on White Street 11 months ago has been continued to Sept. 30.

Jhon Jairo Penaherrera, 19, was charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle after turning himself in to police on a warrant on May 30. He pleaded not guilty to the charge in July.

The warrant stemmed from an Oct. 21 accident on White Street that led to the death of 43-year-old Danbury resident Jose P. Yupangui.

Penaherrera was driving a Honda Accord down White Street shortly before 2 a.m. when he struck Yupangui, who had been crossing near the Ives Street intersection, according to police. Yupangui died at Danbury Hospital.

The warrant for Penaherrera’s arrest was issued May 22, according to court documents.

“It is not unusual for arrest related to these types of investigations to last several months before a warrant is issued and they are arrested,” Detective Lt. Mark Williams said.

Penaherrera is represented by attorney Francis O’Reilly.
