Obituary: Lillian (Linn) Gravdahl Cannon, Former Darien resident, Army Corps nurse
Linn Cannon left this world on her 93rd birthday at her home in the Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, NC. She was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 19, 1922 to Norwegian immigrants Rangvald Andrew and Matilde Pedersen Gravdahl.
She grew up along with her sister, Olga, and brother, Bob, in the city, and graduated from Friends Central High School in 1939. She attended Swarthmore College, then enrolled in nursing school at Pennsylvania Hospital. In 1945 she answered the nation’s call to duty and joined the Army Corps of Nurses.
She served on a hospital ship in the Pacific, achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant. She fondly remembered her military service as a very exciting time of her life.
In 1949 she met Joe Cannon, a chemical engineer, salesman and musician from Warren, PA, and they married on March 4, 1950. With Joe’s work they moved to various communities, living in Jersey City and Englewood, NJ; Towanda and Wynnewood, PA; Darien, CT; and Pasadena, CA before retiring to North Carolina in 1990. Linn was predeceased by Joe in 1993. She moved to the Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary in 2004.
Her career after nursing was as a full-time homemaker, mother and grandmother.
Linn also worked in an independent bookstore in Connecticut. She volunteered her caregiving skills in the Visiting Home Nurses Association and the American Red Cross.
She loved reading, and volunteered in several public and school libraries. And she loved and served the Lord through her church affiliations in each of the communities she lived in, and was a Stephen Minister. At Glenaire she also volunteered her time and talents, played and won at Bingo regularly, and sang with The Glenaires until 2014. Her interests included gardening, crossword puzzles, Jeopardy!, cooking and entertaining, travelling, and supporting every band that Joe played in. Her favorite pastime was visiting and spending time with her extended family and many, many lifelong friends.
She is survived by her four daughters and their families: Dale (Tom) MacQueen of Woodstock, CT; Page Cannon (Jeanne North) of Concord, NH; Hope (Doug) Brown of Cary, NC and Lisa (Mark) Nelson of Davis, CA; grandchildren Kyle MacQueen Feldman (Will) of Raleigh, NC; Eric Brown of Boca Raton, FL; and Derek and Corey Nelson of Davis, CA.
She leaves behind many relatives and friends who will cherish the memory of her grace, kindness and love of others, and her positive outlook on life.
The family wishes to thank the incredible, caring staff in the Health Care Center at Glenaire for their love and service to our mother over the past several years.
