To the Editor:

Last week’s op-ed letter opening with “is anyone else ... fed up with the rainbow madness all over Darien” has me seeing one color — red. I am so thankful this small-minded, bigoted opinion is in the minority of our town — as evidenced by exactly the “offensive” number of the rainbow flag displays this writer is so deeply fed up with.

Rainbow flags represent inclusion, acceptance and a welcoming of all people regardless of lifestyle. It is not promoting nor celebrating one lifestyle over another. It is showing support for every individual and their human right to live their life on their terms without fear of harassment, judgment or harm. It indicates to those who have suffered from feeling shamed or different or not accepted that this is a safe, supportive and unprejudiced community. As far as drawing a line between private property versus town property and what can and cannot be displayed … it is the town’s very job to make these decisions and that communicate the above message.

We are all asked our opinion on these matters when we decide what candidates we support and who we cast our vote for at every election. Clearly, this writer has an issue with our outgoing Selectman so perhaps consider throwing your name in for consideration as a replacement — if change is what you seek.
