There are two animal-related events happening in our area this week and next that I hope will attract your support.
The first is a benefit for one of my favorite organizations, the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, N.Y. The event is at Neiman Marcus at The Westchester Mall in White Plains, N.Y., on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Following cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, Broadway stars Neil Berg, Rita Harvey and Natalie Toro will join Atka, the center's magnificent white ambassador wolf, for an evening of show-stopping Broadway hits. The performance will be followed by a runway show of fabulous "Fashions for the Fall" present by Neiman Marcus.
Sponsored by Neiman Marcus and the publication WAG, with all proceeds going directly to the wolves and the ticket price is fully deductible. Tickets at $50 per person and available at the center's website, www.nywolf.org or by calling 914-763-2373 Ext. 1.
I am also delighted to announce that the award-winning documentary "Buck" will be shown in Wilton through Sept. 23. The film was recently voted Best Documentary at Provincetown (Cape Cod) and Best Documentary at the DocU West Film Festival in Colorado.
"Buck" is the story of Buck Brannaman, a real life "horse whisperer," who escapes a violent upbringing to teach people how to communicate with horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. In the film, the animal-human relationship becomes a metaphor for facing the daily challenges of life. A truly American story about an unsung hero, "Buck" focuses on an ordinary man who persevered and created an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds. If you are looking for something fun to do, I hope you will attend both these events to learn more about how important animals are in our world.
