Ilse D. Wrede of Greenwich, a registered nurse and mother of a Darien resident, died Tuesday, May 8, following a prolonged battle with congestive heart failure. She was 87.

Ms. Wrede was born on July 27, 1924, in Essen, Germany. She became a registered nurse while in Germany and later lived in Paris and Montreal. She immigrated to New York City in 1962 and worked as a nurse at New York University Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, where she was devoted to taking care of the terminally ill, her family said.

She moved to Greenwich in 2007 to remain close to her growing family. She loved history, classical music, good debate and animals.

She is survived by her daughter, Andrea Slattery McCracken of Darien, three grandchildren, Lachlan, Callum and Killian; a brother, Dieter Wrede and his three children, Elke, Marianne and Reiner, all of Germany.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Greenwich Mews, 1/2 Bolling Place, Greenwich, on Saturday, June 2, at 3. Memorial donations may be made to the ASPCA at aspca.org/donate.
