Charles J. Johnson Jr., a former longtime Darien resident, died Thursday, Feb. 2, at his home in Savannah, Ga. Mr. Johnson, 80, was the husband of Chris Johnson.

Born in Jersey City, N.J., he was a graduate of Darien High School, Yale College and Harvard Law School and lived in Darien for nearly 50 years. He was a securities lawyer at the firm Brown & Wood in New York City.

In Darien, he served as the president of the Darien United Way and the Middlesex Club. He was also a member of the parish councils at St. Thomas More and St. John's Church. He retired to Savannah in 1989 where he authored three books and was a founder of the Savannah Book Festival.

Besides his wife of 58 years, Mr. Johnson is survived by two sons, Charles of Scituate, Mass., and Mark of Burlington, Vt., and four grandchildren.
