Carter Manley Strickland I, a long time former resident of Darien, died on Jan. 11, 2016 at the home of his daughter in Boca Raton, Florida.

The son of Dr. Hirace G. Strickland and Agnes McIntyre Strickland, Mr. Strickland was born on Oct. 29, 1940 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Mr. Strickland was a graduate of the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  While in college, Mr. Strickland, along with his cousin, Allen Andrew of Greensboro, interned for their uncle Congressman Harold Cooley in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Strickland was an executive salesman for the W. A. Taylor Company both in Darien and the Southeast, an avid hunter, and a lover of everyone.  Mr. Strickland is predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Diana Wells Strickland on Aug. 6, 2015.

Mr. Strickland is survived by his daughter, Laura Mitchell (Brad), son Carter Manley Strickland II (Elise), and five grandchildren, as well as his sister Jane C. Strickland of Greensboro, North Carolina.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 21, at Grace Community Church in Boca Raton, Florida.  Memorial contributions may be given to Grace Community Church.
