Darien police arrested a Stamford man for driving under the influence and possession of narcotics during the early morning hours of Dec. 9. An officer patrolling near I-95 exit 11 at about 1 a.m. saw a car turn through a flashing red traffic signal and proceed down the Post Road at high speed.

The car was stopped near Hecker Avenue and the driver was identified as Nicholas Panagiotopoulos, 26. While speaking to the Panagiotopoulos, the officer noticed smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle. He told the officer he was coming from a restaurant in Norwalk and admitted to drinking earlier in the night. Furthermore, a cup in the center console of the car contained more alcohol.

Panagiotopoulos was unable to complete field sobriety tests to standards and was placed under arrest. While searching his car officers also discovered about 0.3 grams of cocaine on the floor of the passenger’s seat.

The accused consented to urine testing at police headquarters and the samples were sent to the state forensics lab to be analyzed. Nicholas posted $500 bond and was released with a court date of Dec. 19.
