An officer observed a vehicle pull behind a closed Post Road business and the operator exit and throw garbage into the business’ dumpster, police said. The driver got back into his vehicle and appeared to be leaving. The officer pulled over and made contact with the operator, later identified as Jose Marcos-Melchor, 28, of Stamford. Melchor told the officer he lived in Stamford but was behind the business to discard some trash. The officer noted the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Melchor as he spoke. When asked, Melchor admitted to consuming alcohol earlier but gave varying accounts of how much.

Melchor exited his vehicle and submitted to field sobriety testing which he failed to perform to an acceptable standard. Melchor was placed under arrest for driving a motor vehicle under the influence and transported to headquarters where he was processed for the above charges. Melchor refused breathalyzer testing. He was released after posting a $500 bond and is due in court on Dec. 4.
