Snow day: No trains might leave some Darien commuters in NYC Tuesday night, flooding at Pear Tree Point
A travel ban put in place by Gov. Dan Malloy will be lifted at 5 p.m. Tuesday, he just announced. Still, some Darien commuters will struggle to make it home after MetroNorth halted service after noon.
Darien resident and Board of Finance member Jim Palen made into New York City early this morning.
He told The Darien Times his "early commute into the city this morning was relatively simple with the 5:30 a.m. train arriving on time."
"All day meetings and the planned shutdown of MetroNorth will likely force me to find a hotel for the night. Luckily I brought some extra clothes and a toothbrush just in case," he said. Palen won't miss his Board of Finance public hearing on the budget Tuesday night, as both that and tonight's Planning & Zoning meeting were postponed. Town Hall was closed, along with Darien Public Schools and a variety of other Darien businesses and organizations Tuesday.
A winter storm warning, coastal flood advisory and wind advisory remain in effect for the area, and while mixed with train, snow is expected to return this evening.
First Selectman Jayme Stevenson said that black issue could become an issue Tuesday evening and residents should drive cautiously. Darien Police Sgt. Jeremiah Marron said earlier today the wind had cause some downed trees, tree limbs and power lines Tuesday, though power outages have been minimal.
In line with the coastal flooding advisory, Darien Police early posted a picture of a flooded Pear Tree Point Beach parking lot, adding other areas had been flooded, with a warning not to drive through water:
While hotel rooms might be in demand Tuesday night, Palen is taking it in stride.
"If you don't consider sleeping on a sofa in a friend's room a problem, then all is good," he said.
In the meantime, Palen had one message to his family Darien.
"Now I am just hoping that my three kids can get their butts outside and shovel the driveway," he said.
There was no indication on mta.com as to when MetroNorth service might be reinstated. Whether schools will open on time tomorrow or at all has not yet been decided.
