A birthday party that allegedly included in underage alcohol consumption led to the arrest of one of the present parents according to Darien Police.

On the evening of Dec. 29, Darien Police responded to a report of under-aged consumption of alcohol at 237 Noroton Avenue.

Upon arrival to the address, numerous vehicles were observed by police parked on the street in the area. As officers walked down the driveway of the residence, they were met with an adult man who identified himself as the homeowner.

From where they were standing, the officers could see a small detached building in the rear of the property. Inside the building the officers could clearly see what they believed to be minors and alcoholic beverages. When asked what was going on, the adult male indicated that it was his son’s birthday and he was having a party for him, Darien Police said.

The homeowner asked the officers several times what he could do to minimize their response, according to police. When officers informed the homeowner that they would need to investigate, police said he responded that he had taken all of the attendees’ car keys and informed them they needed to get a ride home. When officers continued to impress upon the homeowner that they would need to investigate in order to assure the safety of the attendees, he became upset, according to Darien Police. The homeowner then informed officers that his wife, later identified as Brooke Rizzo, was inside the party with the attendees, police said. As officers approached the building, police said the male homeowner attempted to enter prior to the officers, closing the door behind him. The officers entered the building and directed the male homeowner out.

Once inside, officers said they encountered numerous underage attendees. Officers also said they observed a table with a beer-drinking game set up on it and numerous cases of various alcoholic beverages. Also present with the group of minors was Brooke Rizzo, according to Darien Police. Police said Rizzo stated she was throwing a party for her son and his friends. When questioned, Rizzo stated she had made arrangements to get everyone a ride home and that the parents of all attendees were aware of, and okay with, the consumption of alcohol by their children, according to Darien Police. Rizzo was very argumentative with officers, Darien Police said, stating several she didn’t believe there was anything wrong with what had been occurring. Several of the parents who responded to retrieve their children indicated to officers that they were unaware of any alcohol being present at the gathering, Darien Police said.

Rizzo, 47, was informed that she was being placed under arrest for the charge of delivering alcohol to a minor. She was transported to headquarters where she was processed for the above charge. Rizzo was released on a promise to appear and is due in Stamford court on Jan. 11.
