Caregiver issued misdemeanor for leaving child unsupervised in car in Darien
Darien Police officers were called to a parking lot at Town Hall on Feb. 19 at approximately 9 a.m. for the report of a small child left unattended in a vehicle. Upon arrival, witnesses on scene told officers that a small child, later identified as being three years old, had been left alone in the vehicle for approximately 10 minutes. The vehicle was running and the keys were in the ignition. Officers observed the three year old in the driver’s seat playing with the steering wheel. A short time later the driver of the vehicle, the child’s nanny, returned to the vehicle. The nanny was identified as Claudia Ortiz, 51, of Bridgeport.
Ortiz informed officers that she was dropping off another child in her care at an event at town hall and the child in the vehicle didn’t want to get out as it was cold outside. The parent of the children was contacted and responded to the scene. The child that had been in the vehicle was unharmed.
Ortiz was issued a misdemeanor summons for the above charge and release from the scene on a written promise to appear. She is due in court on March 1.
